– L1 adaptive control was applied to a fixed-wing aircraft. A nonlinear model of the aircraft has been
developed in Simulink. A baseline controller, pole placement, has been developed for lateral and
longitudinal dynamics. Since aircraft's parameters are never exactly known, random variations have
been given to the model to see if the adaptive controller was robust with respect to those variations
and able to compensate for.
– L1 adaptive control showed very high robustness to parameters variation, making it a viable solution
for advanced flight control systems; for example, a high variation in inertial and mass properties, as
well as aerodynamic instability (Cmalpha>0), are compensated by the control system.
– Furthermore, variations of altitude were automatically compensated, meaning that L1AC can reduce
and even eliminate the need for gain scheduling.
