Work experience
From 04/2015
• Name and address of employer Menarini Silicon Biosystems Via Giuseppe di Vittorio 21/b3 40013 Castel Maggiore (BO), Italy
• Type of business or sector Biotechnology, life science.
• Occupation or position held Test engineer
• Main activities or responsibilities Test engineer in the Verification and Validation team, R&D department: as part of the V&V team
I am directly performing the verification and validation tests of high technology devices for cell sorting
operations, mainly focusing on the optical and electronic aspects of the systems. The activity consists
in designing the test protocols according to the system and subsystem project specifications, executing
the test, analysing and reporting the collected results. For the projects I’m following I am the reference
point of the other members of the Verification and Validation team. I am also the engineering interface
toward the manufacturing department for what concerns the optical assembly.

10/2014-09/2015
• Name and address of employer Istituto Nazionale Fisica Nucleare (INFN) via G. Sansone 1, Sesto Fiorentino 50019 (FI), Italy
• Type of business or sector Research center.
• Occupation or position held Research fellow at INFN.
• Main activities or responsibilities Characterization of Si detector for ELI-NP: I have conducted an extensive measurement program on
different silicon detectors which will constitute the active layer of an innovative sampling calorimeter with
very fast response time (less than 10 ns). In particular I have measured the dark current in severe
reverse bias regime using a programmable high voltage source-measure unit remotely controlled by
LabVIEW software and I have studied the response time to short pulse laser. This calorimeter will be a
part of the ELI-NP Gamma beam characterization system (http://www.eli-np.ro/)

07/2012-06/2014
• Name and address of employer University of Florence P.zza S.Marco 4, 50121 Florence, Italy,
European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) 385 Route de Meyrin, 1217 Meyrin, Switzerland.
• Type of business or sector University, research center.
• Occupation or position held Research fellow at University of Florence and based at CERN from 07/2013 to 06/2014.
• Main activities or responsibilities Data mining in the LHCb experiment: I have optimized the reconstruction and selection of the signal,
related to the presence of a category of particles, given an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio. The
analysed data sample contains about 332 millions of events (corresponding to 33 TB of disk space).
The algorithms that I developed for this purpose are based on C/C++ and python languages.
Calibration of B−tagging algorithms: I have contributed to the maintenance and the calibration of the
B−tagging algorithms, used by the LHCb collaboration to distinguish particles containing a b (beauty)
quark from the corresponding anti-particles.
Shift and on-call expert: I have been closely involved in the data taking with nightly and daily shifts and
as on-call expert for one of the LHCb sub-detectors (muon detector).
Teaching and supervision of students: I have given lessons of kinematics and mechanics for the
Bachelor degree course in Physics at the University of Florence and I was member of the examining
board for the same course. I have proposed a thesis project to a master’s degree student and I have
supervised his work which has allowed him to graduate within the set deadline and with full marks and summa cum laude.

Education and training
01/2009 – 12/2012
• Name and type of organization

University of Florence.
• Principal subjects/Occupational skills
covered
Data analysis in LHCb: I have studied together with two experts the production mechanism of a particle,
called J/ψ meson. The relevant parameters have been determined with a maximum likelihood fit to
the signal events, containing the J/ψ particle and extracted with a cut-based selection. I have also
quantified the effects of the systematic uncertainties using Monte Carlo techniques. With the obtained
experimental results we have validated several theoretical predictions, based on the Quantum Chromo
Dynamics (QCD), which describe the production mechanism. The analysis has been published in Eur.
Phys. J. C 71 (2011) 197 and in Eur. Phys. J. C73 (2013) 2631 and presented at several international
conferences.
Development and maintenance of monitoring system for the LHCb muon detector. I have worked
on the development and maintenance of the muon detector monitoring system, based on PVSS/WinCC
(SCADA System) architecture. I have added several new tools in order to monitor the parameters of
the gas detectors (multi wire proportional chambers) which constitute the muon system, such as the
temperature and the gas flux, interfaced through the DIP protocol (Data Interchange Protocol). I have
implemented an alarm system able to spot and automatically take action in case of an interruption of the
gas flux inside the detectors.
Research fellow at CERN: during my PhD I have obtained a research fellow position at CERN for one
year as on-call expert for the muon system of the experiment. The period spent a CERN has been
fundamental also for my thesis project thanks to the high interaction with the experts of the detector and
the analysis techniques.
• Title or qualification awarded PhD in Physics with thesis “Study of J/ψ production with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at √
s = 7 TeV”, available on the CERN Document Server CERN-THESIS-2012-379.

For the thesis project I have measured the time alignment and the cross-talk noise of the gas detectors
(multi wire proportional chambers) of the LHCb muon system, reconstructing and analysing a sample
of cosmic rays acquired by the experiment during the commissioning period. The obtained results have
been documented in a public note CERN-LHCb-PUB-2009-028.
• Title or qualification awarded Master degree in Physics with thesis “Studio delle prestazioni del rivelatore di muoni dell’esperimento
LHCb mediante la rivelazione di muoni cosmici” (“Commissioning of the muon detector of the LHCb
experiment with cosmic muons”). Final mark: 110/110 summa cum laude.

• Principal subjects/Occupational skills
covered
As a thesis project I have measured the light yield ratio of a sample of scintillator detectors CsI(Tl)
(Thallium doped Caesium Iodide), radiated with two α and γ radioactive sources, for the FAZIA and
GARFIELD experiments (Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro). I have personally developed the experimental setup of the electronic chain (pre-amplification, shaping and digitization of the signal), performed the data acquisition and analysis. The obtained results have been published in Nucl. Instr. and Meth. in Phys. Res. B 266 (2008) 2383-2386.
• Title or qualification awarded Bachelor degree in Physics with thesis “Caratterizzazione di scintillatori di ioduro di cesio in funzione
della concentrazione di drogante” (“Characterization of Thallium doped Caesium Iodide as a function of
dopant quantity”). Final mark: 110/110.
