October 2013 to July 2014 Researcher Assistant Thin Films Laboratory, UNIPA http://www.dieet.unipa.it/tfl/index.html I worked on my Master Thesis “ Photo and Thermal Stability of White LED LUMOGEN based”. I studied the weathering of an organic coating, composed by a poly-metil-matacrilate matrix, dissolved in ethyl acetate, in which has been dissolved an organic yellow photoluminescent dye perylene based, which has permitted to convert part of the light radiation emitted from the source, an inorganic blue LED (GaN/InGaN) ,so generating warm white light. "Stability improvement of PMMA and Lumogen® coatings for hybrid white LEDs" (image link) (Poster presented at the Tenth International Conference on Electroluminescence and Optoelectronic Devices" (ICEL-10), held in Cologne, Germany, from 31st August to 3rd September 2014.) Hybrid white LEDs employing perylene-based dyes for the frequency down-conversion of blue light, generated by a standard inorganic source, suffer from colour rendering variations due to the degradation of the organic molecule under prolonged irradiation. To avoid such inconvenient, proper encapsulation of the dyes in resins or other polymer matrices can prevent their accelerated ageing; nevertheless, embedding polymers canal so exhibit significant bleaching caused by chemico-physical agents. The system was developed with the purpose to automate and to make more efficient systems used for street lighting as a function of environmental conditions and the influx of vehicles. The system is able to discriminate between the night and the day, it is capable of switching on in the first case and switch off in the second, and, according to the vehicles, is able to vary the light intensity bringing it from a minimum value, in conditions of open road, to a maximum value, in terms of the presence of flow of traffic through the interface with the PIR sensors. Were made two streetlights prototypes, the communication between the devices is wireless, it uses the standard IEEE 802.15.4 for communication.
